Employee Spotlight - Sandy Smith receives award at ACE for “Outstanding Service to AWWA.”
At Burnett, Inc., we are incredibly proud of Sandy Smith. On top of being known as “Santa” to all of our children or grandchildren at the office, he also serves as our national manager of sales, service, testing, and business development. Recently, he was recently recognized at ACE24 with the “Outstanding Service to AWWA” award. This is no suprise to us! This prestigious honor reflects Sandy’s remarkable impact and influential volunteer work with AWWA and the Georgia Section.

Sandy’s journey in water treatment began with his father, Cleveland R. Smith, a plant superintendent for the City of Buford, Georgia. Growing up, Sandy gained invaluable hands-on experience and developed a passion for clean, safe water. His career spans over four decades, including 24 years with Gwinnett County and eight years with DeKalb County before joining Burnett, Inc. His extensive experience and expertise in optimizing water treatment processes have been instrumental in addressing critical issues such as corrosion control and alkalinity.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sandy’s commitment to the water community is exemplary. He has served in various leadership roles, including GAWWA Section Chair, member of the AWWA Board of Directors, and current president of the Water Buffalos. Sandy played a pivotal role in the development of the WARN program, enhancing the resilience and preparedness of utilities nationwide.

Sandy’s influence to public health and clean water extends internationally. His work with Water For People in Honduras profoundly impacted his perspective, solidifying his commitment to the industry. Sandy’s numerous trips to aid communities without access to safe water underscore his dedication to improving global water conditions.
Volunteering has been a cornerstone of Sandy’s career, providing him with opportunities to develop skills and connect with peers. His efforts have not only benefited the water industry but also brought personal fulfillment and growth.
Outside of work, Sandy enjoys camping, fly fishing, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He is also an ordained minister, performing wedding ceremonies and playing Santa for charity events.
